Waves of tsunami hit residences after a powerful earthquake in Natori

Some posts are simply for me.  This would be one of those times.  Words simply cannot explain what we have witnessed today as a result of the largest earthquake in Japan’s history.  Our deepest prayers, sympathies, and thoughts go out to the people of this devastated area.

Many of you may be wondering – Where is God in all of this?  That is a completely legitimate and understandable question.

The answer is that God is right there in the midst of it.  He’s not absent, asleep, disinterested, or on vacation.  Quite the contrary.

Psalm 139:8-12 says “ If I ascend to heaven, you are there!  If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!  If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me.  If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you;the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.”

If God is there during the midst of this, then the natural follow-up question is why did God allow this to happen?  A lot of people may give their thoughts but here is the simple reality – I don’t know.  And truly, no one else does either.  This is a complete, devastating natural disaster and tragedy.

The only comfort I can take from this is simply knowing that God was there.  He was there when the tectonic plates shifted.  He was there when the water came crashing ashore.  He is there right now.  And He will be there when the relief efforts begin and the country is rebuilt.

That’s the only comfort I can take.  I’m so grateful He is there.

Please join me in praying there will be no more aftershocks, that the nuclear facilities cool down and stabilize, that people are safe and will be rescued, that the fires will be put out, and that God will bring supernatural peace in the midst of the immeasurable fear and pain people are experiencing.  And when opportunities are provided for you to get involved in helping bring relief to this area, please do so.
