Leaders often have great vision for their churches or companies.  They generally have a great vision for their careers.  Wise leaders also have a wonderful vision for those in their family.

What leaders often have no vision for is the potential of the people they lead and what they are capable of.  I wrote in my book 10 Indispensable Practices Of The 2-Minute Leader the following words: “When hiring, assigning or reviewing, let a person’s past inform you, their present instruct you and their potential inspire you.”

On Friday, June 20th ESPN NBA Draft insider Chad Ford joined the radio show The Herd, hosted by Colin Cowherd.  While discussing the highly ranked Kansas freshman Andrew Wiggins, Ford had some interesting insights.

During pre-draft conversations, many experts continually poke holes in every player’s game.  Ford brought some balance to the conversation by challenging how leaders and experts think about Wiggins.

The following are his comments and four lessons all leaders can learn:

  • Poor Leaders Focus On What People Cannot Do – Any lazy leader can tell my why something will not work.  It takes a leader with vision to tell me why something will work.  Ford said, “I think a lot of people can watch tape and watch game film and determine what people can’t do.”
  • Great Leaders Focus On What People Can Do – Ford continues, “But the best draft people, both in the NBA and the guys I listen to, they are going to project what you can do in the NBA. What are the things you have that are going to make you special or elite in the NBA and what are the things that are fixable and you can work on.  Wiggins does three or four things that another five guys in the NBA can’t do.”
  • Poor Leaders Have A Lack Of Vision For Those On Their Teams – God wants to tell a magnificent story of the love of His Son through every life.  Great leaders, therefore, have an incredible vision for everyone on their teams.  Ford says about many in basketball, “There’s a lack of vision on Wiggins.  There’s no way he fails in the NBA.”
  • Great Leaders Have A Vision And Project What People Can Do – As a leader you do not want to make the mistake of having unrealized potential of those on your team.  Ford concludes, “You have to be able to project what a guy can do…I would rather fail on a guy because I projected what he can do and he didn’t live up to it than write a guy off find out later all the things he can do, oh yeah he’s doing in the NBA.

Is there anyone on your team you do not have a proper vision for?
