In an effort to add maximum value to pastors and church leaders, INJOY Stewardship Solutions has dispatched me to attend the Double Conference at NewSpring Church.  During the next two days, I will be bringing some of the top leadership lessons from the conference designed to challenge and equip pastors and church leaders to double in weekly attendance.

Today’s second session was also conducted by Perry Noble.  The following are 61 leadership quotes and lessons will challenge your thinking about what it takes to grow a church:

  1. Leaders, you have to define where the church is going.
  2. You don’t really know what you value until you’re five years in as a church.
  3. Normal people in our churches don’t think about vision and values as much as we do.
  4. If you get too far removed from student ministry your church will become irrelevant before you know it.
  5. If you want to know where your church is heading, disciple a group of high school students.
  6. Defining your vision and values does not happen in a 1-hour meeting. If you can define it in a 1-hour meeting it’s a vision not worth following.
  7. Found People Find People
  8. Most church people don’t know what evangelism is. But they know Found People Find People.
  9. People say I found Jesus. He wasn’t lost. I believe Jesus found me.
  10. Not every church wants to grow.
  11. My first church was in Pickens, SC where the men are men and so are most of the women.
  12. Some people don’t want churches to grow because they’re going to lose their seat.
  13. Who are you willing to let walk so lost people get found.
  14. Not everyone wants to see lost people found because some are lost themselves. Just because you’re in church doesn’t mean you’re in Christ.
  15. Is Israel safe? I say “is God sovereign?”
  16. Here at NewSpring Church we are really into numbers and we celebrate the numbers.
  17. Every number has a name. Every name has a story. Every story matters to God.
  18. People say, “Numbers don’t matter at our church.” Then don’t take an offering.
  19. Asking people to come to a place where they can meet Jesus is evangelism.
  20. 10% of the people in your church have the gift of evangelism.
  21. It’s OK to talk about football and it not turn into a spiritual conversation.
  22. If you get your lost friends here, we won’t embarrass you.
  23. Having intentional, focused services on reaching people far from God really does work.
  24. Get on stage and announce in two weeks bring your family and friends and I’m going to preach “that message”.
  25. If the worst thing you can say about me is I target lost people, then talk about me all you want.
  26. Easter is a home run. Even the devil goes to church on Easter.
  27. If it’s the Gospel you can’t water it down.
  28. God is willing to do whatever it takes to find people far from Him and bring them to His Son.
  29. Changed lives should be celebrated.
  30. Very rarely will I give a new believer a microphone.
  31. What gets celebrated gets repeated. – Andy Stanley
  32. Pastors, when you give an invitation, you got to give it. You give an invitation. God is responsible for the results.
  33. Saved People Serve People.
  34. Members. These are the people who go out to eat after church on Sundays and don’t tip good.
  35. We don’t have members at NewSpring. We have Owners. Members have rights but owners have responsibilities.
  36. If something breaks, owners have a responsibility to do something about it.
  37. The only way the church develops ownership is when people serve.
  38. There is a way to become great and it is through servanthood.
  39. If people aren’t serving in your church, they’re not growing.
  40. Involvement does not mean attendance. Involvement means you are participating.
  41. If people aren’t serving in your church, they’re not becoming more like Jesus.
  42. A lot of us in our churches have service evaluators who show up every Sunday.
  43. The way you turn evaluators in participators is to say will you come alongside of me and help me fix the problems you’re seeing? They’ll then leave because you’re not feeding them.
  44. Some leave the church because they desire attention, not spiritual growth.
  45. Does LeBron James have to tell people he’s gifted? No, you hand him a ball and let him play the game.
  46. You have to audition to sing because we’re committed to excellence. Even if you’re the pastor’s wife.
  47. We don’t have anything high capacity around here. Can you help us pick up trash between the services.
  48. Motivation buy guilt, not vision. You cannot shame people into serving.
  49. 10-15% of your church have the gift of mercy. When we motivate by guilt all the mercy people volunteer and then you can’t find them in two weeks.
  50. “We need”. Take that language out. Few respond to need but many respond to vision.
  51. You want happy, smiling people with good breath. It’s not a mint. It’s a hint.
  52. The biggest problem if someone isn’t serving is that they’re being disobedient.
  53. The difference between elders and deacons is elders drink and deacons smoke.
  54. Elders and deacons are often elected by a popularity contest.
  55. There is not a staff member in ministry that’s ever worked a 40-hour week. We call that a vacation.
  56. Elders and deacons who work 4-6 hours a week in a church tell church staff who work 40-60 hours a week in a church what to do. If a business did that they would go out of business. What about accountability? I’ve seen more messed up accountability with this model than anything.
  57. Churches who are not growing has nothing to do with the power of God but power-hungry people.
  58. A church is not effective when the pastor ministers to the people but rather when the body ministers to the body.
  59. Find me a verse that says you have to be ordained to preach a funeral. Show me that in the body control freak.
  60. When saved people serve people served people become saved people.
  61. Healthy things grow.
