15 Thoughts On Why Pastors And Christian Leaders Refuse To Change For The Better

Recently, I wrote the post The Most Attractive Quality A Leader Can Have.  In it I made the argument that if you could only choose one leadership characteristic, humbleness would be the most attractive.  The response to the post was overwhelming.

In fact, the article’s most quoted statement was from my Senior Pastor Dr. Crawford Loritts who said, “If a leader is unteachable, run from them as fast as you can.”

This past weekend, Dr. Loritts continued the theme when he spoke on the importance of being a repentant individual.  His thoughts were so insightful I wanted to pass them along to you.

The following are 15 Thoughts On Why Pastors And Christian Leaders Refuse To Change For The Better:

1. Some people do not change because they are not desperate enough.
2. Some people have a high threshold for disobedience.
3. Some people do not repent because of pure pride.
4. If you have made up your mind (not to repent), no amount of evidence will convince you otherwise.
5. When power is used for intimidation, it flows from fear and insecurity.
6. Power should be used to serve others.
7. Being immersed in religion is not the same as having a relationship with God.
8. Repentance requires humility.
9. Christian conformity is not repentance.
10. Self-deception results in degeneration of personal behavior.
11. A failure to respond to (Biblical) Truth builds a resistance to Truth.
12. Failure to repent produces hardness.
13. Repentance is a gift from God.
14. Repentance softens our heart but only a soft heart repents.
15. People only change when they repent and believe.

Dr. Loritts also provided the following 5 signs of a fruitful Christian life just a few weeks ago:

1. Are you growing in Christ-like character?
2. Are others being impacted by your (lack of a) Christ-like witness?
3. Are you overcoming sin?
4. Do you have a desire to do and be what God wants?
5. Do you love God’s Word or do you attempt to avoid it?
